Patient wristbands are the critical link to patient safety

We see them all the time on patients’ wrists in the hospital—the little plastic bracelet with some sort of coding or writing on it, typically with the patient’s last name, a first name, and then a bunch of jargon that only a medical person or a computer can understand.
But have you ever looked closely at many of these wristbands? The ink is fading, sometimes the patient’s name is smudged and the information is hard to read. What would happen to that patient during a time of critical need, when accessing the patient’s vital stats and diagnosis was the difference between life and death? This can happen if you’re not employing the best technology to not only produce the wristbands from the onset, but to also make sure that the information within the bar code on the wristband successfully connects to your overall medical records department or patient information system. Creating a clear, legible wristband requires the ability to fit the important data into the bar code and the bar code onto the wristband. These are probably two of the biggest challenges facing healthcare providers today when it comes to wristbands.
